So the CAP Round I Cut-Offs Are Out... Now What?
The CAP Round I Cut-Off lists are finally here! If you are a 12th-standard student or a parent, you are probably feeling a mix of relief and total confusion. Looking at a 144-page PDF full of random codes and percentages is enough to make anyone’s head spin.
But don't worry—at CareerSetu, we believe data shouldn’t scare you; it should help you. We have looked at the entire CAP Round I data set from the State Common Entrance Test Cell and mapped out the Top 10 Engineering Branches that students picked this year.
Let’s break down what these choices mean for your future, how to avoid the "herd mentality," and how to plan your CAP Round II strategy.
The "Big Ten" Branches: What the Cut-offs Are Telling Us
1. Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) CSE is still the king. In top colleges, the cut-offs are very high. For example, at COEP Technological University, Pune, the All India cut-off reached 99.48% JEE Main, while PICT stood at 98.92%. If you want CSE at a top-tier college, you need to be in the highest percentile bracket.
2. Information Technology (IT) IT is the go-to choice for coding fans who might just miss CSE. Elite colleges like PICT saw IT cut-offs around 98.53% JEE Main. It offers almost the same job opportunities as CSE, so it stays very competitive.
3. Artificial Intelligence & Data Science (AI-DS) Data is big business now, making AI-DS a huge hit. It is actually beating many traditional branches. At top Pune colleges like PVG’s College of Engineering, cut-offs hit 93.76% JEE Main.
4. Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI-ML) Just like AI-DS, this is for students who want to build the future of automation. We saw solid cut-offs like 87.88% JEE Main at Shah & Anchor Kutchhi Engineering College in Mumbai.
5. Electronics & Telecommunication (ENTC) ENTC is the perfect "bridge." It sits between hardware and software, giving you two career paths. Top autonomous colleges like MIT Academy of Engineering, Alandi closed their ENTC seats at 89.83% JEE Main.
6. Chemical Engineering While not as many people apply here compared to IT, top Chemical programs are very prestigious. The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, had a high cut-off of 97.86% JEE Main. Core engineering excellence is always in demand!
7. Electrical Engineering With the Electric Vehicle (EV) revolution, Electrical Engineering is a very strong choice. Quality colleges like Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Technology, Pimpri saw cut-offs at 89.61% JEE Main.
8. Mechanical Engineering This is for the builders and thinkers. In top government-aided colleges, it still requires high scores (like COEP at 90.84% MHT-CET). However, at good private colleges like Modern College of Engineering Pune, it is more accessible at 81.65% JEE Main.
9. Automation & Robotics / Mechatronics This is the future of factories! It mixes mechanical parts with electronics and software. Colleges like Sanjivani College of Engineering, Kopargaon offer these programs with friendly entry-level cut-offs like 75.25% JEE Main.
10. Civil Engineering The foundation of all infrastructure. Civil Engineering offers many government job opportunities. Quality regional colleges like YCCE Nagpur closed their Civil seats at 76.65% JEE Main.
The "CS FOMO" Trap: Don't Just Follow the Crowd
Every year, we see a dangerous trend: the CS/IT Herd Mentality. Because these branches have the highest cut-offs, many parents and students think everything else is a waste of time.
“Choosing a branch only because of a high cut-off is like buying a shoe size just because it’s the most popular size in the store. If it doesn’t fit your foot, you can't run.” — Harshal Garad, Founder of CareerSetu.
If you love designing physical objects but force yourself into coding just because of "scope," you might end up frustrated or burnt out.

Your CAP Round II Strategy Guide
If you didn’t get your dream seat in Round I, don't worry. Round II is all about strategy. Follow these three rules:
- The 3-Tier Option Form:
- Aspirational (Top 15%): Pick colleges where the cut-off was 0.5% to 1.5% higher than your score.
- Realistic (Middle 70%): Pick colleges that match your score perfectly.
- Safety Net (Bottom 15%): Include 2-3 colleges where the cut-off is 2% to 3% lower than your score so you aren't left without a seat.
- "Float" vs. "Freeze": If you have a seat but want a better one, choose Float. This keeps your current seat safe while you try for a better option in the next round.
- Check Autonomous Colleges: Look at "Un-Aided Autonomous" institutes. They often have the freedom to teach the latest tech like AI and IoT, which makes you more employable even if their cut-offs are a bit lower.
